ABC’s Monday Night Football for the Commodore 64 is an ambitious undertaking for the Commodore 64.

The opening screens are lovely to look at as it delivers a very polished look. The digitized speech is also a nice touch from the opening screen to the security code screen.

This all comes at a price…loading times are dismal.

Even when you go into the options page during gameplay, you are at the mercy of disk access times. It takes so long to get back into the action. The digitized speech and the software sprites gobbling up most of the memory.

That being said, this game is visually stunning. The players are large and well rendered. It makes for a very lively scene during the thick of it.

Standard American Football rules are used in ABC Monday Night Football for the Commodore 64. It looks great and the interface is intuitive but the gameplay itself is a bit cumbersome. Trying to scroll through a line of helmets below until you find the player you want to pass to definitely takes a measure of skill. In addition, it is rather hard to make out what is going on. The view is almost completely top-down cropping much of the action downfield. The animation is a bit choppy to boot. Considering how much action that is happening on the screen it is understandable.

Mind you, it has an extensive team list and it makes for a very in-depth game where you can play entire seasons and eventually enter play-off rallies. This game stays true to ABC’s long tradition of football coverage.

It even has a modest rendering of the recently departed Frank Gifford.

Conclusion

All things considered, it still is an entertaining game. Compared to Fourth and Inches, I would say that it is graphically superior but at the expense of gameplay which Fourth and Inches excelled in.
If given a chance, ABC’s Monday Night Football for the Commodore 64 is an acquired taste for the football fan who appreciates its high production values and is willing to overlook its long load times.
